New to Alcoholics Anonymous?
If you think you have a drinking problem, Alcoholics Anonymous can help. Many of us came to AA feeling hopeless and exhausted by drinking. What we found was a fellowship of people helping each other stay sober one day at a time.
You are welcome at any AA meeting.
You don’t need to sign up, pay anything, or even speak. Just come and listen.
What Is Alcoholics Anonymous?
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a fellowship of people. They share their experience, strength, and hope with each other. This helps them solve their common problem and support others in recovering from alcoholism.
AA began in 1935 when Bill W. and Dr. Bob discovered that one alcoholic helping another brings lasting sobriety. Today AA has helped millions of people around the world recover from alcoholism.
What Happens at an AA Meeting?
Meetings vary, but most include:
• Members sharing their experience with alcoholism and recovery
• Readings from AA literature
• Fellowship and support from others who understand
Some meetings are discussion-based, while others focus on reading from AA literature like the Big Book.
You are always welcome to simply listen if you prefer.
What If I’m Nervous About Attending?
Many of us felt nervous before our first meeting. That’s completely normal.
You worry about what to say, whether you belong, or what others will think. In AA you will find people who understand exactly how you feel, because they were once new themselves.
You are welcome to come, sit down, and simply listen. No one will force you to speak or share unless you want to.
The most important thing is that you came.
Open vs. Closed Meetings
Open Meetings
Open meetings are available to anyone interested in learning about AA. This includes family members and friends. It also includes those who simply want to learn more.
Closed Meetings
Closed meetings are for people who have a wish to stop drinking.
If you’re unsure, you are always welcome to attend an open meeting.
Does AA Cost Anything?
There are no dues or fees for AA membership.
AA is self-supporting through voluntary contributions from its members.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.
